Lochav, Lochab, Lohchab, Lohchap, Lohchav, Lochhav, Lochhab, Lohach or Arh is Gotra of Jats. They were called Lohchav as Panwars had inhabited this area in Rohtak. They are found in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. They were supporters of Panwar Confederacy.

Origin of Lohchab

A subset of the Panwars. The Gotra has its roots in the Panwar race, but that’s not where the tale begins. Many Panwar Jats in the Mughal Empire refused to submit to the authority of the Shenshaw (King), making them impregnable. Lohmarod is a Turkic word that means “so strong and adamant that it can even bend an iron rod,” which was their official name. The name Lohchab, which literally means “they can even chew iron,” was later given to many of these courageous individuals. At first, it was just a name for the courageous Panwars, but it evolved into its own gotra over time. Lohchab and Panwar are sibling gotras, so marriages between them are still forbidden.

History of Lohchab

The King Arh was in fourth generation of Ardas and is mentioned in many stories of Puranas. He was a brave Warrior. According to Todd’s Rajasthan the origin of the Arh dynasty cannot be traced out, but a few gotras of this dynasty are found among the Jats.
