Rakesh Tikait Position and Career
Tikait received his M.A. from Meerut University and subsequently pursued his LLB. He joined the Delhi Police in 1992 as a constable and then as a Sub Inspector, but left in 1993-1994.
He joined the BKU after leaving the police force. Tikait officially joined BKU after his father’s death and thereafter became its spokesperson. Tikait led the Kisan Kranti Yatra from Haridwar, Uttrakhand, to Delhi in 2018.
Tikait ran for the Khatauli seat in the 2007 UP Assembly elections as a candidate of the Bahujan Kisan Dal (BKD) party (with Congress support), but finished sixth. In the 2014 Indian general election, he ran for Amroha Lok Sabha on a Rashtriya Lok Dal ticket.
Farmers protest ( 2020-21 )
In November 2020, his organization BKU joined the 2020-2021 Indian farmers’ protest, demanding that MSP be declared a legal right, farmers be excluded from the law to curb pollution and allow crop burning , and farm bills be repealed.”Our main concern is that operations in mandis and outside of mandis would be different.”
While mandis would charge taxes, there would be no taxation or market fee outside of the mandis. The administration is not directly abolishing the Agricultural Produce Market Committees. However, the mandi system guarantees a minimum support price, which will ultimately fall,” said Rakesh Tikait.
Following the outbreak of unrest in the National Capital on January 26 (Republic Day), Delhi Police filed a FIR against Rakesh Tikait and a few other farmer leaders for inciting violence on Republic Day and violating the NOC provided by Delhi Police.
